Question:    Can you just write this as a recursive sequence

    a₁ =10   ,   a_n = a_n-1   + 5 ( n-1)            ?????

No, it really isn't difficult:

400 papers   minus townhouse papers - 134 house papers = Booth papers

400 - 87 - 134 = Booth Papers = ___________ papers      You should finish !

d-12 = j + 12   sub in the red equation

9j -12 = j + 12

8j = 24

j = 3                  so j had 3 to start with...then gets 12 and has  15 ....they BOTH now have 15   for a sum total of 30 shells

it is

from -2 to 5   is a distance of 7     we want 5/7 of this to get to 3   (from 2)

   for a   from 7 to -8 is a 'distance' of -15         5/7 * (-15) added to 7 = -75/7  + 7 =  - 26/7      ( as Chris found ....!)

2, -8    is not on the line    y = 2x/3

                 it IS on the parallel line    y =  2x/3 - 9 1/3         multiply both sides by 3

                                                    3y = 2x - 28

                                                 -2x + 3y = -28             Is that what you need?

p = original count of people

1/4 got off leaving   3/4 p

  5 people got on   making it  3/4 p + 5

     then 1/2 got off     leaving  1/2      1/2 (3/4 p + 5)

        and 201 got on for a total of 80     1/2 (3/4p +5) + 20 = 80     Now all you have to do is solve this for 'p'
