And we have a right triangle.......using the Pytagorean Theorem, we have

12^2 + (18 - x)^2  = x^2  simplify

144 + x^2 - 36x + 324  = x^2

468  = 36x       divide both sides by 36

13 = x

So.....the part left standing = (18 - x) = (18 - 13) = 5 ft

I think the expression used by the customer must have been  something other than 4(k - 1), because this expression  would produce an even number of tiles.

There will 25 on top and bottom  and on 23 on each side, since the ones on the sides are "sandwiched" in between the top row and bottom row.

So  25(2) + 23(2)  = 50 + 46  = 96

0.01  = 1/100 

sqrt (1/100)  =  1/10

The total arrangements =

P(7,5)  = 2520

The side  lengths can be represented as  x , 2x and 3x

The preimeter  =   x + 2x + 3x  = 6x

And the longest side is half of this...
