You would simplify it, since it is an expression and not an equation (with an equal sign.) Therefore it would be:

-m/2 + 10 + 4

-m/2 + 14

4g -2 =-6

First add 2 to both sides:

4g = -4

Divide both sides by 4:

g=-1

And answering Stu's original question:

For improving spelling and grammar, I would suggest the (apparently) old-fashioned way of reading more.  Believe it or not, you will subconciously improve those skills. And of course, CPhill's way is worth a shot, too!

x - 2x-1 = 4x+3

Simplify the left side:

-x - 1 = 4x + 3

Add x to both sides:

-1 = 5x + 3

Subtract 3 from both sides:

-4 = 5x

Divide by 5:

x = -4/5
