Can you help me with this problem?

I can finish a job 2 hours longer than you. After I had been working for 1 hour,  you joined me and we completed the remaining portion of the job after 3 hours.

How long would it take me to do the job if I worked alone?

Let's say I can finish the job in n hoursthus I work at a rate of 1 jobn hrYou finish the job in (n2) hoursand thus work at a rate of 1 job(n2) hr

When working together the rates combine.I work 1 hour at a rate of 1 jobn hrand then work 3 hours at a rate of (1n+1n2)jobhrcompleting the job

1 job=(1 jobn hr1 hr+(1n+1n2)jobhr3 hr)

dropping units for a moment

1=1n+2n2n(n2)3

n22n=7n8n29n+8=0(n1)(n8)=0n=1, 8

n can't be 1 as that would make your partner finish the job in (-1) hoursso it must be that n=8 hrs
