.In addition to squaring things like (to the power of 4) $$7^4$$ is written as 7^4
.Square root $$\sqrt{9}$$ is written as sqrt(9)
.algerbraic terms like x (would it be just 'x') Yes x is just x that is why multiply has to be *
There are other ways too. These are just the most straight forward ways.
