Don's apples = D
Alan's apples = A
D = A * 1.666

A - 30 = (D -30)/5

A = 54
D = 90

Alan had 54 apples at first

A/ D   =   3/5       ⇒    D   =   (5/3)A         (1)

A -  30                     1

_______    =          ___           cross-  multiply

D  +  30                   5

5(A - 30)  =  D  +  30       (2)         sub  (1)  int  (2)

5 ( A  -  30)   =  (5/3)A  +  30       simplify

5A  -  150  =  (5/3)A  +  30

5A  - (6/3)A   =  30  +  150

(10/3)A  =  180

A   =  180  ( 3/10)   =     54  apples  at  frist
