Problem on Newton's laws:

An object is hung from a spring balance suspended from the roof of a lift. When the lift is descending with uniform acceleration of 0.8ms2 the balance indicates a weight of 245 N. When the lift is ascending with uniform acceleration ams2(to be found) the reading is 294 N.

Find the value of a.

The answer is 1.04 ms2, but can someone please show the method?

In order to get a to be 1.04ms^-2 you have to assume a gravitational acceeration g = 10ms^-2 (rather than the more normal 9.8 or 9.81).

Thank you very much!!!
Yes, the book assumes g=10ms2.
