-7(2 + 2x) = -42    distribute the -7 across the terms in the parenthesis

-14 - 14x = -42      add 14 to both sides

-14x = -28             divide both sides  by -14

x = 2

first use distributive property

-14 + (-14x) = -42

now add 14 on both sides

-14x = -28

now divide by -14 on both sides

x = 2

and there's your answer!
