On a map, the scale shows that 1 4 cm is equivalent to 20 km. The distance between two cities on the map is 5.5 cm. What is the actual distance between the cities?

20 km  / 1.4  cm =  d / 5.5 cm    where d is the distance we are looking for....

Cross-multiply

5.5 (20)  = 1.4 d    divide both sides by 1.4

d = about 78.57 km
