An art student uses dilations in all her art. She first plans the art piece on a coordinate grid. Determine the vertices of the image of the triangle with vertices A(1,1) B(2,4) and C(3,9) after a dilation with scale factor 1.5.
I'm very confused with this problem, so I need all the help I can get. Thanks to anybody that has helped me solve this problem! I really appreciate it :)
An art student uses dilations in all her art. She first plans the art piece on a coordinate grid. Determine the vertices of the image of the triangle with vertices A(1,1) B(2,4) and C(3,9) after a dilation with scale factor 1.5.
I asume the center of enlargement is the centroid.
We have: →A=(11)→B=(24)→C=(39)
The centroid of the triangle is: →c=13⋅(→A+→B+→C)=(xa+xb+xc3ya+yb+yc3)=(1+2+331+4+93)=(2143)
1. Barycentric coordinates:
→A−→c=(1−21−143)=(−1−113)→B−→c=(2−24−143)=(0−23)→C−→c=(3−29−143)=(1133)
2. Scale factor 1.5
(−1−113)⋅1.5=(−1.5−112)(0−23)⋅1.5=(0−1)(1133)⋅1.5=(1.5132)
3. The vertices of the image +→c
(−1.5−112)+(2143)=(0.5−56)(0−1)+(2143)=(2113)(1.5132)+(2143)=(3.5676)
The vertices of the image are A′(0.5,−56)B′(2,113)C′(3.5,676)
