Let $f(x) = x^4-3x^2 + 2$ and $g(x) = 2x^4 - 6x^2 + 2x -1$. Let $b$ be a constant. What is the smallest possible degree of the polynomial $f(x) + b * g(x)$?

I don't understand what smallest possible degree means

The degree of a polynomial is the highest power of one of its terms. For example, the degree of f(x) is 4 because of the x^4 term. I hope this gets you started.
