The building was 34 feet tall and geroge was 15 away from it, how long of aladder would he need to reah the top?

We can use the Pythagorean Theorem here.....the ladder represents the hypotenuse of a right triangle...so...

 

ladder length  = √[ 34^2 + 15^2 ]  = √ [ 1381 ]  ≈   37.16 ft

Close.....the square root of the sum of the squares of the leg lengths = the hypotenuse

 

Look at it this way

 

leg 1^2  + leg 2^2  = hypotenuse^2       take the square root of both sides

 

√ [ leg 1^2  + leg 2^2 ]  = hypotenuse

Oh so you must square the sum of the legs squared legs or aka square the sum of a^2 + b^2

Not "square" the sum of the squares of the legs....but....take the square root of the sum of the legs squared
