Jessica has one cube with a side length of $1,$ and another cube with a side length of $1.$ She then glues the two cubes together, to form one single solid. What is the smallest possible surface area of the single solid?

The solids both have a surface area of

 16=6

if you add 6 times 2, you get 12. 12-2=10
