Explain what the symbol f(x) means. An example would be appreciated!

The symbol f(x) represents a function.

f is the function, x is the input.

f(1) = 3

f(2) = 6

You can figure out that the function is times 2

f(x) = 2x

Here is a function problem:

f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c

f(0) = 4

f(1) = 15

f(2) = 36

What is product abc?

Anyone is welcome to answer this problem :)

Notes: Function does not have to be f, it could be any letter

p(x) or b(x) both work!

I hope this helped,

f(0) = c so c = 4,

f(1) = a + b + 4, implies that a + b = 11, so 2a + 2b = 22 --- (1)

f(2) = 4a + 2b + 4, implies that 4a + 2b = 32 --- (2)

(2) - (1) gives 2a = 10, a = 5.

5 + b = 11, b = 6.

Therefore abc = 4*5*6 = 120.

The notation is used to denote which function we are referring to on a graph....for instance, we might have the functions f(x), g (x), h(x), etc., on a graph........all are "functions of x".....they all take some x value and return a y value (where they are defined......)
