  1. A pet food company wants to know the number of pets owned by adults ages 21 to 70. The frequency table shows the data from a simple random sample of the targeted population.

Total pets owned

1

2

3

4

5

6

7

Number of adults

248

567

1402

728

419

456

203

What is the estimated mean for the population? Explain your answer and show your work.

Answer: 526.9

The formula to find the estimated mean for the population based on the data will be: Mean= (Σ f(x)) / (Σ f)

x is going to be the Total of Pets Owned, while f is going to be the Number of Adults.

By plugging in the data into this formula you get:

((1*248)+(2*567)+(3*1402)+(4*728)+(5*419)+(6*456)+(7*203)) / (1+2+3+4+5+6+7)

Simplify and reduce

14752/28 = 526.857

Round up: 526.9

Thank You SO Freaking Much!!!

I'm not sure about this, but wouldn't the denominator be    248 + 567 + 1402 + 728 + 419 + 456 + 203   ?

This would give you the average (mean) number of animals owned by the surveyed population.

As Guest notes, the denominator should be Σf, so:

Σ(fx)/Σf = 3.667,  or mean number of pets per person ≈ 3.7
