The cost of five apples is the same as the cost of six pears. If one apple is 15 cents more than one pear, then what is the total cost of 5 apples and 6 pears?

my attempt:

apple = a, pear = p

5a = 6p

a = p+0.15

5(p+0.15) = 6p

5p + 0.75 = 6p

0.75 = p

0.75+ 0.15 = 0.9

0.9 = a

5(0.9) + 6( 0.75) = £9

We have 5a=6p and a=15+p

So, 5(15+p)=6p, 75+5p=6p, p=75 cents.

Now, 5a=6(75)

5a=450 cents

So, 450+450=900 cents or 9 dollars.
