Total Area = area of the square + area of the triangle = y^2 + (1/2)(4)(y)  =

(y^2 + 2y)cm^2

The figure shown is made up of a square & a triangle. Express the area of the figure in terms of Y

The area of a trapezoid is given by the formula

where
b1, b2 are the lengths of each base
h is the altitude (height)

b1 = Y

b2 = Y + 4

h = Y

area=(Y+Y+42)Y=(2Y+42)Y=(2Y2+42)Y=(Y+2)Y
