John had some marbles. He lost 27 of the marbles and gave 48 marbles to his

friends. He was then left with 13of the marbles. He packed these into 10 packets.
Some of the packets contained 3 marbles while the rest contained 5 marbles.

     (a) How many marbles were packed into the 10 packets?

     (b) How many packets contained 3 marbles?

x = original count of marbles

   losing 2/7ths means he has 5/7 ths of original left

5/7 x - 48 = 1/3 x

x = 126

at the end he has 1/3 of the original amount = 42 marbles

   3   3    3    3   +   5   5   5   5  5  5
