We want to get  x  alone on one side of the equation.

 

3x + 4y  =  x - 8y + 24         Subtract  x  from both sides.

 

2x + 4y  =  -8y + 24             Subtract  4y  from both sides.

 

2x  =  -12y + 24                   Divide through by  2 .

 

x  =  -6y + 12
